Every once in a while I read a bit of poetry. Of course only those that are easy to understand and do not use too many metaphors, and probably, those that I could relate to or makes sense to me. Here's one couplet I heard recently and found pretty interesting.
Its a couplet by Rabindranth Tagore and it talks about praise.
We have always known of praise as a positive way of encouraging people, adults as well as kids. It is a good motivator. It is recommended over negative reinforcements like punishment or scolding. But, like punishment, praise too has its pitfalls. A person who works expecting praise is seeking approval. By praising someone we are giving approval and making him/her dependent on such approval. Are we constantly seeking approval...... from our parents, teachers, boss, friends, society......?
This is how the couplet goes........
"Praise is like a liquor
Praise is like a dope
For save me from the garland
Which is but a hanging rope"
- Rabindranath Tagore
