Think about it.......

Bizarre Love!!!

The Bombay Times, a supplement with the popular newspaper Times of India, every day carries a small column at the top where they report bizarre incidents that happen around the world, mostly in foreign countries. But I don’t think they need to report those incidents that happen abroad, there are plenty happening right here in India everyday. Take today’s front page news for instance…..”Love Test”…..a guy asked her 23 year old fiancé to prove her love for him. When she said she could die for him, the fiancé asked her to lie down on the road and ran his car over her thrice. The poor girl is now in hospital with multiple fractures and possibility of permanent disability; and the guy is of course absconding. Ain’t it bizarre?

But why did it happen, the girl was stupid? the guy was stupid? hey they both were stupid!! But who is more stupider….the girl, the boy, nah not them it is (drum roll)….The Media!!…after all it is all these potboiler movies that give the idea of death for love. How often have we heard the dialogues, “mein tumhare liye apni jaan tak de sakti hun” (I will give my life for you), or, “agar tu na mili to mein apna jaan de dunga” (If you don’t love me I will kill myself)…and ain’t there all those movies in which the hero or the heroine try to test each other’s love by pulling such similar stunts…… the girl tells guy go and jump from the mountain for me, and he goes, or the girl says I will drink this poison if u don’t love me, the guy says go ahead, she drinks, he rushes her to the hospital, and some more mushy dialogues later they are in love …….isn’t it far too common!!!

So is it strange, if someone tries it out in real life. You bet it is. Nobody has taken it so far. But people have tried it in real life. I remember once I had been to this village for a project and a village guy who was guiding me around told me, the local “hero” of the area was in love with this girl (now his wife), but she refused to acknowledge, so he made similar threats of jumping in the well, the only clitch was this guy (the story teller) was all ready with rope n all to pull him out in case the hero had to actually attempt and the girl ignored. Then again probably a girl would be all too familiar (and perhaps boys too,) with the clichéd dialogues “I will die if I don’t get to meet you.”, I have heard these and lines in similar effect before. Is this all the oh so romanticized, poetizied, to which eons of odes are wriiten, to which Romeo n Juliet would swear to… four letter word “love” all about?

Surely any emotion, any relationship, that could kill you, woudn’t it be a negative emotion? Wouldn’t a healthy emotion, a healthy relationship be one in which the individual can grow and nurture and not feel like killing oneself!!! Remember in the movie "As Good As it Gets" where Jack Nicholson says to Helen Hunt, "You make me want to be a better man.".

And yet so many times media has twisted and contorted and publicized this “love” so much, it is used so frivolously. People keep falling “in” love and then “out” of love, and feel like a failure if they are not “in love”. They are so busy looking at others for love, they forget that they should love and respect themselves first.
