I just read Somerset Maugham's Up at the Villa. Its the first time I am reading his book, pretty famous author. I had glanced through his Cakes and Ales some time earlier and found it interesting. This book however pales in comparision to Cakes and Ales. I am sure he writes better. This book ain't bad, the writing style is amazing, crisp and fluid, gets you involved in the themes and characters quickly. Its a short story, I finished it in one sittting.
The story is about a young widow, who has not decided what to do with her life and is "up to the teeth with love". She is willing to marry for companionship and mistrusts love after a failed marriage. Soon things compound with two suitors and a murdered man and she faces moral dilemmas. The story is been brought out well and is worth reading once. My suggestion borrow it, no need to stock it up unless you are an ardent Maugham fan.
