I have been reading Mulk Raj Anand's book Greatest Short Stories. It is the first time I have been reading his work and it is amazing. I simply loved the first story 'The Lost Child', a child goes to a fair with his parents and he wants all that he sees, toy, sweets, flowers.....and then he gets lost. A friendly stranger finds him and tries to console him with the same things he had wanted earlier but now the child rejects it all............all he wants now is his parents and nothing else.
Such a simple warm story says so much about us. In our struggles with life there are so many things we covet on the way and we go in search of materialistic pleasures but when we suddenly lose someone very close to us all what we have coveted seems worthless, we would gladly give it all back for a few more moments with our loved ones.
It seems this story was also made into a award winning short film or documentary.
